Social Networking Growth

How long will the exponential growth of social networking sites like MySpace, Facebook and others continue? It's becoming as important to have an online profile as it is to have an email address. Has MySpace become the defacto place to go? Not neccessarily. Orkutz is making inroads, and others like Tagged are growing quickly. Granted a lot of membership growth is fake profiles and spammers. But people are finding they can ignore, block or make their profiles private if need be.

There is plenty of innovation yet to come in social networks. Flux looks interesting. With it's portable profile you can join participating communities simply. Maybe someone will come up with a spam-resistant authentication method and create a solid profile server that you can take with you to forums and communities everywhere? Somewhere, you can bet a creative programmer is working on it.
